Rheumatology is a branch of medicine dedicated to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. Doctors who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists primarily deal with immune-mediated disorders of the immune system, soft tissue, autoimmune diseases, vasculitides, and connective tissue diseases.

Many of these diseases are now known to be disorders of the immune system. Rheumatology is considered to be the study and practice of medical immunology.

Since the 2000s, the inclusion of biopharmaceuticals (which include inhibitors of TNF-alpha, certain interleukins, and the JAK-STAT signaling pathway) in the standard of care has been one of the key developments in modern rheumatology.
